In a recent report, journalist Tomas Gonzalez-Martin revealed that Real Madrid have decided not to pursue Red Bull Leipzig talent Christopher Nkunku this summer. It is believed that Los Blancos have ruled out signing the French striker due to his hefty €120m pricetag.
Nkunku’s Impressive Form In German Football
Nkunku had a brilliant campaign at the Red Bull Arena as he produced a lot of promising performances for Leipzig on the attacking end of the pitch. The 24-year-old scored 35 times and grabbed 19 assists in 50 appearances for the German club last season across multiple competitions.
The Frenchman has proved his worth in the final third by averaging 2.4 shots, 1.9 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. He has even taken care of the ball when interchanging possession in the opponent’s half after completing 81.8% of his attempted passes in the German top tier (stats via whoscored).
Real Madrid Decide Not To Pursue Nkuku: Good Decision By Ancelotti?
Nkuku has established himself as a prolific goal-scorer in Germany and has shown great instincts to score plenty of important goals for Leipzig last season. He can even orchestrate a few decent chances for his teammates in the final third. Nkunku is primarily a central striker but can even fill in as an attacking midfielder or as a left-sided wide player if required.
The French sensation has got the pace to cause a lot of problems for the opposition centre-backs. Still, he is yet to prove himself outside German football, so his hefty €120m price tag is not justified.
Thus, it feels like Real Madrid have made a good decision by halting their pursuit of the Bundesliga star. However, there is no denying that he would have added a lot of goals and creativity to Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti‘s frontline.
The Madrid giants have still got Karim Benzema fit and firing on all cylinders. Therefore, Ancelotti is in no immediate rush to find a new centre-forward. Still, Real Madrid should think about revisiting the possibility of recruiting Nkunku if he continues to score goals at such a high rate in the upcoming campaign.
