In a recent report, The Daily Mail stated that Newcastle United are hoping to land Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett. It is believed that the Magpies are eyeing a move for the English full-back who had a decent loan spell at St. James’ Park last season.
Targett’s Impressive Loan Spell At Tyneside Last Season
Targett enjoyed a six-month loan stay with the Magpies in the previous campaign as he managed to impress by putting in some promising performances on the left side of Eddie Howe’s defence. The 26-year-old appeared in 16 matches for the Tyneside outfit but failed to register a goal or an assist since joining Newcastle on loan back in January.
The Eastleigh-born sensation gave a good account of himself by averaging 2.6 tackles, 1.6 interceptions, 2.4 clearances, 1.5 crosses and 1.2 key passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball from the back, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 74.4% in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).

Is Targett A Decent Signing For Newcastle United?
Targett loves a tackle and can sense the danger quickly to win possession back for his team. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when required and can deliver a few inviting crosses into the opponent’s penalty box.
The English sensation was enjoying his football at Newcastle last season, so it makes a lot of sense for the player to seek a move to St. James’ Park permanently during this summer transfer window.
At 26, Targett is about to enter his prime and is well-equipped to become a real asset under the stewardship of Eddie Howe. The hard-working full-back is good enough to serve as a Newcastle‘s first-choice left-back and could help them push for a European place in the Premier League over the next few years.
