In a recent report, The Times (subscription required) revealed that Newcastle United remain confident about signing LOSC Lille defender Sven Botman this summer. It is believed that the Magpies are eager to strengthen their squad under their new sporting director, Dan Ashworth and have identified the Dutch centre-back as a potential option for this summer transfer window.

Botman’s Impressive Form In Ligue 1

Botman managed to put in a run of solid defensive displays in French football during the 2021-22 Ligue 1 campaign. The former Ajax talent scored three times and secured one assist in 32 matches for his current employers this season across various competitions.

The Netherlands Under-21 international has given a good account of himself on the defensive end of the field based on his average of 1.0 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 4.5 clearances per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He has even been accurate when interchanging possession with his teammates, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 88.1% in the French first division (stats via whoscored).

Should Newcastle United Head Coach Eddie Howe Snap Botman Up This Summer?

Botman can time his challenges well to make a few important interceptions inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when the opposition are on the offensive and usually takes care of the ball well when playing his way out from the back. Standing at 1.95m, Botman can be a towering presence inside his penalty box and usually wins his fair share of aerial duels.

However, the Dutchman missed some crucial games for Lille last season due to injuries. Thus, he has to find a way to remain fit and cope with the physical nature of English football if Newcastle manage to get him on board this summer.

Botman will enhance the quality of Eddie Howe‘s defensive department and could help the Magpies challenge for a top-six place in the Premier League next season.

At 22, Botman has his best years ahead of him and could grow into a future star at St. James’ Park. Therefore, Howe should try everything in his power to snap the Lille defensive ace up during this summer transfer period.
