In a recent report, L’Equipe has claimed that Newcastle United are locked in a three-way battle for Stade Brest 29 full-back Romain Perraud this summer. It is believed that the Magpies could face competition in the form of Southampton and Leeds United in pursuit of the French defensive ace in this off-season (via L’Equipe).
Perraud’s Impressive Form At Stade Francis-Le Blé This Season
Perraud has enjoyed a rich vein of form in French football this season and was responsible for putting in some influential displays down the left flank. The 23-year-old has banged in three goals and secured seven assists in 37 matches for Les Pirates this term across all competitions.
The French talent has given a good account of himself at both ends of the pitch after he averaged 1.7 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, 1.8 clearances, 1.3 shots, 1.0 key passes, 1.1 crosses and 0.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Ligue 1 this season. He has even distributed the ball with conviction based on his pass completion rate of 79.9% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Perraud’s current contract at Stade Francis-Le Blé is set to expire in the summer of 2025, so the French side has no immediate need to cash in on him. The Magpies will have to come up with a sizable offer if they want to win the race for his services during this summer transfer window.
Will Perraud Be A Good Fit For The Magpies?
Perraud has decent pace under his belt and is quite aggressive in the way he conducts himself down the left-wing. The Toulouse-born sensation has proven himself to be a capable defender at the back as he is proficient at snuffing out the danger quickly and winning possession back for his team.
Offensively, Perraud can be a real handful as he has got the hunger and the work ethic to make some tireless runs with the ball. He can whip in some quality crosses into the opponent’s penalty box which explains how he has secured seven assists in the Ligue 1 this season. Furthermore, the Frenchman is a pure striker of the ball and can generate a lot of venom with his shot attempts that makes him a goal-threat from long range.
At 23, Perraud is only going to get better with each season, so there is no doubt that he will be a great fit for the Magpies this summer. Steve Bruce needs to add more quality to his squad if he wants his players to steer clear of the relegation zone in the upcoming campaign.
Perraud fits the bill perfectly as he can be an influential presence at both ends of the field and would serve as an upgrade over Jamal Lewis at St. James’ Park in the coming seasons. Bruce has got enough experience to get the best out of Perraud if he can find the funds to bring him to Tyneside in the summer.
