Although Tottenham Hotspur have found some stability in the front with the return of their star striker Harry Kane, the Lilywhites’ attacking prowess lacks that sharpness and the failure of Victor Janssen to live up to his hype has added more worries to the cause.
Like most other Premier League clubs, Tottenham are also in the hunt for an attacking midfielder cum striker, who could ease up Harry Kane’s burden up front. And with no big names generally available during the winter transfer window, Spurs will have to look for players that they can get for cheap and will have to do their business smartly.
If recent reports are to be believed, Spurs might have just found an interesting prospect in AC Milan’s attacker Keisuke Honda. Many Italian outlets have reported that the player has fallen out of favour with new Milan boss Vincenzo Montella and they’re more than happy to allow the player to leave in January.
Tottenham Hotspur should waste no time getting his signature if the Japanese International is available in the winter. Although he has made only 3 appearances for Milan this season and is yet to score a goal, Honda has a pass accuracy of 79%, of which 39% were forward passes.
Honda is lethal from free-kicks as he has shown on many previous occasions. His control in long shots is also commendable and he scored quite a many goals from far out during his stint at CSKA Moscow. His contract with Milan is until June next year and Milan will surely want to offload the attacking midfielder this January as they are not very keen on offering him a new contract or losing him for free.
Although Honda could be quite dangerous at times on the break, his major weakness is his tackling and at times his finishing too. English Premier League demands defensive contribution even from its strikers and it is one of the main reasons why players like Firmino, Diego Costa, and Alexis Sanchez has flourished this season.
He has the needed experience to cope with the highest level of football. He will have to compete with the likes of Christian Eriksen and Son to break into the first team and he looks like he will be successful in doing that.
The Serie A isn’t as open as the Premier League and perhaps Honda could find that in his side as he’ll have more freedom in the attacking third. He will have to improve his work rate, however.
Tottenham are currently in the 5th position in the league with their unbeaten streak recently broken by Chelsea last week. They are a bit far from the title contenders bracket at the moment and Pochettino will look to increase the squad depth as they move into the hectic Europa League schedule next year.
