Newcastle United faced off against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium earlier tonight hoping to pick up a result on the road. The Magpies kept themselves in the game in the first half and went into the half-time interval with a goalless scoreline.
The Gunners made a bright start to the second 45 minutes and finally broke the deadlock in the 50th minute courtesy of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal. Bukayo Saka doubled Arsenal’s lead just ten minutes later when he found the back of the net with a tidy finish.
Aubameyang put the icing on the cake for the North London giants when he scored again in the 77th minute. The Tyneside outfit failed to come up with a response as the match finished 3-0 in favour of the home side.
Let’s take a look at how each Newcastle player fared during the contest against the Gunners.
GK: Karl Darlow – 6/10
Darlow made some solid stops to keep the scoreline down. However, his ball-distribution was poor during the game, and he won’t be happy after shipping in three goals on the road.
RB: Emil Krafth – 6/10
The Newcastle full-back made a couple of important interceptions at the back but failed to influence the game in the opposition half.
CB: Jamaal Lascelles – 6/10
The English defensive ace cleared the danger when needed and was a strong presence in the air. However, his performance was far from convincing during the 90 minutes.
CB: Ciaran Clark – 5.5/10
He was a commanding presence in the air but gave away the ball cheaply way too many times on the field. It was a lacklustre display from him tonight.
LB: Jamal Lewis – 6/10
Lewis got stuck in with a few tackles but struggled to earn possession back for his team. He failed to make an impact in the final third.
LM: Joelinton – 6.5/10
He tracked back to help Lewis in defence and completed a couple of promising dribbles during the game. However, he was toothless in the attacking third.
CM: Matty Longstaff – 5/10
Longstaff struggled to get a stranglehold in the game and was poor in the second half. He ran out of gas and got subbed in the 77th minute.
CM: Jonjo Shelvey – 6.5/10
The former Liverpool midfield ace shielded his backline well and had some bright moments going forward as well. He was the only one who showed some creativity with his passing in the Newcastle midfield. However, his set-piece delivery was abysmal on the night.
RM: Miguel Almiron – 6/10
Almiron deserves a pat on the back for being a constant threat on the counter. He was lively during his time on the pitch but didn’t do enough to get himself a goal.
ST: Andy Carroll – 6.5/10
The Magpies centre-forward won a lot of aerial duels for his team but never looked like he had a goal in him.
ST: Callum Wilson – 6/10
Wilson struggled to get himself involved in the game but was usually quite tidy when linking up play with others around him. He didn’t get too many opportunities to find the back of the net.
Substitutes:
RM: Jacob Murphy – 6/10
He struggled to get into the game.
CM: Jeff Hendrick – 6/10
Hendrick added some energy to the Newcastle midfield.
CM: Elliott Anderson – N/A
He did not get enough time to influence the game.
