Premiership giants Rangers were unable to take advantage of an excellent situation in the away match against Benfica tonight, after succumbing to a 3-3 draw against ten men. The Ibrox club started the game in poor fashion as some questionable defending led to Connor Goldson scoring an own goal. Although Steven Gerrard’s men kicked on from that point and responded with three goals of their own after a Benfica player got sent off, they were unable to see out the win. Two goals in the final fifteen minutes from Rafa Silva and Darwin Nunez meant that the home side stole two points out of Rangers’ pocket, much to the visitors’ despair.
Here Are The Rangers Player Ratings Vs Benfica:
Rangers Player Ratings Vs Benfica
Allan McGregor – 6
The veteran goalkeeper didn’t actually have too many saves to make over the course of that tie but did well against crosses into the area. Couldn’t have done much about any of the Benfica goals.
James Tavernier – 8.5
The Ibrox club’s skipper continued his blistering run of form with yet another convincing performance down the flank. Worked hard in defence and played a peach of a cross for Morelos’ goal.
Connor Goldson – 7
The Englishman was the unfortunate recipient of an own goal tonight, but he couldn’t really have helped the situation. Probably shouldn’t have let Nunez run through, but marshalled the back-line rather well.
Filip Helander – 5
The centre-half’s mistake in the opening knockings of the game is what cost Gerrard’s side the early goal. Should’ve been stronger in the lead-up to the second, and arguably had to read the possibility of the third.
Borna Barisic – 8
Apart from the odd shaky attempt to play the ball out from the back, the Croatian international was sublime with his general play. Bombarded forward whenever the opportunity presented itself and delivered well too.
Ryan Jack – 8.5
The Scottish midfield kept things ticking in the core of the side with his passing and availability. Didn’t do much wrong over the course of the tie and probably didn’t deserve to lose at the end either.
Steven Davis – 8
The veteran midfielder played a number of excellent passes from the Gers’ engine room, as it was his ball that led to the Benfica red card in the first half. Calm and composed with the ball at his feet as well.
Glen Kamara – 8
The Finnish ace produced a moment of quality in the first half to hand Gerrard’s men the advantage prior to the half-time whistle. Was rather secure with his passing and didn’t make any rash decisions either.
Joe Aribo – 6.5
The Nigerian midfielder had an excellent opportunity to find the net in the first half when he headed wide from close range. Didn’t have his most fluent performance despite passing the ball around effectively.
Alfredo Morelos – 9
The Colombian undoubtedly deserved to be on the winning side tonight for the performance that he put in. Was unplayable for large chunks of that tie, and made a number of sharp runs into the area as well.
Ryan Kent – 7.5
The speedster had some excellent moments in the first half and even hit the post in the second period. Played some smart forward passes and tried hard to open things up for his teammates in attack.
Substitutes
Scott Arfield – 6
The veteran came on in place of Aribo in the second half as Gerrard looked to manage the match. Didn’t make any mistakes as such.
