Manchester City locked horns with West Ham United at the London Stadium earlier today hoping to pick up all three points on the road. The Mancunian outfit made a sloppy start to the game as they conceded the opening goal in the 18th minute when Michail Antonio scored with a fine acrobatic effort. Pep Guardiola’s players responded positively but struggled to break the West Ham defence down in the first 45 minutes.
The visitors found a way back into the game early in the second half when Phil Foden came off the bench to find the back of the net with a tidy finish from close range. Both teams fought tooth and nail in the remainder of the clash but couldn’t come up with the winning goal as the match finished 1-1 with Guardiola’s men coming away with a point from East London.
Let’s take a look at how each Man City player performed during the contest versus the Hammers.
GK: Ederson – 5/10
The Brazilian goalie could have done better to stop Antonio’s effort. Otherwise, he didn’t have too many saves to make as he was largely untroubled in the second half.
RB: Kyle Walker – 6.5/10
The English speedster performed his defensive duties well at the back and even managed to pull off some energetic runs in the opposition half. However, he will be disappointed for not keeping a clean sheet.
CB: Ruben Dias – 4.5/10
Dias got overpowered by Antonio in the lead-up to West Ham’s opener. He also had a few nervy moments in defence which could deplete his confidence after a promising start to his life in England.
CB: Eric Garcia – 5.5/10
The Spaniard found it difficult to cope with the quick movements of the Hammers attackers but did enough to limit the opposition to just one goal.
LB: Joao Cancelo – 7/10
Cancelo was a constant threat with his running down the left flank and has got an assist to show for his efforts. However, he was far from convincing when defending inside his half.
CM: Bernardo Silva – 6/10
The Portuguese playmaker worked his socks off at the centre of the park but lacked sharpness in the final third.
CM: Rodri – 5/10
He failed to put to a stop to the West Ham counterattacks and was often caught ball-watching in midfield.
CM: Ilkay Gundogan – 5/10
Gundogan struggled to create too many chances in the attacking end of the field in what was overall a mediocre display from him today.
RW: Riyad Mahrez – 6/10
The Algerian wide player could not come up with a goal during the 90 minutes but deserves credit for trying his best right until the end.
ST: Sergio Aguero – 5/10
The Argentine striker is not playing at his best, and it was evident in his performance today. He ran out of gas and got replaced by Foden for the second half.
LW: Raheem Sterling – 5/10
The English attacker was unusually quiet in the first half and was guilty of squandering a glorious chance to win the game for his side in the second 45 minutes.
Substitutes:
LW: Phil Foden – 8/10
The English youngster came off the bench to rescue a point for his side by scoring from a tight angle. He was a real nuisance for the Hammers defenders during his time on the pitch.
CM: Kevin De Bruyne – 7/10
The Belgian international made an immediate impact by orchestrating a couple of decent chances for his teammates in the final third.
LB: Oleksandr Zinchenko – 5/10
He offered very little after coming on for the final 12 minutes of the game.
