According to AS, Sergio Ramos is keen on extending his contract at Real Madrid for a further two years. His current contract expires at the end of next season. But, the club has shown no interest in doing so. It is believed that they are not in a hurry to extend Ramos’ contract and would only be able to extend by one year due to their policy.
Set to follow the footsteps of Casillas?
Ramos’ potential contract extension at Santiago Bernabeu depends on a lot of factors. Firstly, he is already in the final phase of his career, and the club has a policy of offering only one-year extensions to players above the age of 32. The defender, in that regard, turns 34 next month and will be 35 even before his current contract expires.
Ramos’ steady decline has been evident in the past 18 months or so. But, the Spaniard has remained a vital figure of the Real Madrid backline, notably making 22 league appearances this term. During this period, he has scored five goals while building a strong partnership with Raphael Varane.
As a result, Real Madrid now have the best defence in the league, having conceded just 16 goals. They are also leading the table, albeit by just one point.
Nevertheless, it means Ramos, much like his former teammate Iker Casillas, is still an undisputed member of the first-team. However, it is unlikely that the defender would follow his footsteps by moving elsewhere in our opinion.
An improved role for Eder Militao?
Ramos’ importance in the Real Madrid side has prevented new signing Eder Militao from making an impact in the first-team this season. The Brazilian joined the club in a €50 million move from FC Porto last summer. But, he has mustered only 542 minutes of league football, with only six starts.
Therefore, Militao could certainly enjoy a more prominent role in the first-team even from next season, should Real Madrid retain their stance in Ramos’ potential contract extension. And with the Spaniard unlikely to continue after two years, he is indeed a part of the club’s plans in the long-term.
Will Real Madrid go all out for a defender?
Real Madrid’s unwillingness to offer Ramos a two-year contract extension also hints at the fact that they might finally spend big money on a central defender in this upcoming summer transfer window.
It is needless to say that the new arrival would most likely be tasked with the responsibility of replacing Ramos in the long-term. However, there is a bright chance the Los Blancos should actually go for a proven centre-back instead of an inexperienced defender – a mistake they made with the signing of Militao last summer.
