According to th reports from Yorkshire Evening Post as cited by Leeds Live, Leeds United are interested in signing German defender Robin Koch. The 23-year-old is also attracting interest from Premier League clubs like Wolves and Leicester City.
Koch has represented Germany twice, and the 23-year-old is being seen as a significant talent. The defender is a mainstay for his side in the Bundesliga, and he has 22 appearances in all competitions this season. Freiburg have punched above their weight this season, and they currently occupy the 8th spot on the table, and Koch has played a significant role in that.
Why will Leeds United need defenders?
Leeds United would undoubtedly need to invest in a defender in the summer. Gaetano Berardi is in the final few months of his contract with the club, and it seems to us that he could part ways in the summer. Ben White who has emerged as the mainstay at the back this season is only on a season-long loan from Brighton.
Hence, only Liam Cooper could be the only centre back remaining at the club in the summer. If the Whites move to the Premier League, we expect them to strengthen at the back significantly.
A talent like Koch is unlikely to move to Leeds United if they are still in the second division. Therefore the Yorkshire club must get promoted to the top flight to attract a German international. Even then, Wolves and Leicester City will provide fierce competition for his signature.
A good signing for Leeds?
Koch stands in at 6ft3, and he is a dominant force in the air. The defender is known for reading the game well, and he can make clean challenges and tackles. The 23-year-old also showcases decent quality with the ball at his feet, and he would be a reliable addition to Leeds United’s backline.
United’s transfer plans are likely to depend on which division they would play in next season. A move to the Premier League will give a much-needed chance for owners to invest heavily in the squad. However, Leicester are in a position to get Champions League football, and that could tip the scales in their favour. On the other hand, if the Whites get someone like Koch, then he can become a regular starter for them at Elland Road. It remains to be seen where the Freiburg defender’s future will lie with his current contract expiring in 2021.
