According to a recent report by Leicester Mercury, quoting Sky Sports News journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Brendan Rodgers’ high-flying Leicester City side are said to be looking at the possibility of acquiring PSV Eindhoven’s Dutch international star Steven Bergwijn as the Foxes look to sustain their place in the top four of the Premier League until the end of the current season. The report suggests that Brendan Rodgers is targeting a versatile attacking player and that the former Ajax man is right on top of the gaffer’s wish-list.
It has been claimed that the Leicester City manager is eager to bolster the attacking aspect of his team, going into a period that could effectively make or break their entire season. For all the excellent work that the players at Rodgers’ disposal have done, with the ever-changing environment of the Premier League scene in mind, it’s not surprising that the gaffer wants to add more talented players to the front-line.
What Would Steven Bergwijn Offer This Leicester City Team?
The Dutch international is originally a pacy winger by position but is more than capable of playing anywhere across the front-line, thereby making him an option across various roles within a side.
While the speedster does excel on either flank, he can do an equally good job operating as a number ten and has even played the lone striker’s position at times in his career. The youngster has featured in 28 fixtures for PSV Eindhoven this season and has even managed an impressive return of six goals and 13 assists.
With 31 goals to his name from just under 150 appearances for the Eredivisie giants, the Dutchman has proven time and again that he can be the difference in a game of football, and his tricky nature and dribbling abilities could make him an excellent option for Premier League clubs. The youngster tends to be extremely direct in his play in that he isn’t afraid to take his man on, while his finishing skills once inside the box are quite stellar too.
Why Leicester City Must Bring In Bergwijn In January?
The Foxes are in an extremely comfortable position in the league this season, owing mainly to the fact that apart from Liverpool and Manchester City, none of the usual members of the top six have been performing up to scratch. The likelihood of Brendan Rodgers getting to play Champions League football next season is very high, and he should be happy to add any experienced reinforcements to the side that he can get his hands on.
The Dutchman would offer a different sort of skill-set to most of the other Leicester City attackers, with only Demarai Gray resembling him in playing style. The 22-year-old though, is undoubtedly on a different level to the aforementioned Gray, because of the sheer amount of European experience he possesses. Despite being young, the PSV man has already notched up nine caps for the Dutch national team, and would surely be a smart addition by Rodgers if he’s able to get this deal through the door.
