According to Alfredo Pedulla, Inter Milan midfielder Matias Vecino is keen to join Tottenham Hotspur in January. The Uruguayan could arrive in north London in exchange for Christian Eriksen moving to Inter. Pedulla believes that talks are gradually progressing, though it remains to be seen whether Spurs will accept the swap deal.
Vecino’s success at Inter Milan
Vecino initially made his name at Fiorentina, especially in the 2016/17 campaign. His performances were rewarded with a €24m move to Inter in the summer of 2017. And since then, he has become a critical figure of the Nerazzurri midfield, having already made 88 competitive appearances for the club.
Especially under new manager Antonio Conte, Vecino has thrived in his role as an aggressive midfielder. His partnership alongside the likes of Stefano Sensi, Marcelo Brozovic and Roberto Gagliardini has made Inter arguably the most impressive team in Serie A this campaign.
That being said, a move away from San Siro might make sense, to an extent. Players like Gagliardini and Sensi are already making quite a mark in the first-team. As a result, Vecino has started in only ten league games so far.
Is Vecino a viable target for Tottenham?
Vecino could be an ideal target for Tottenham Hotspur for multiple reasons. Firstly, the Uruguayan international is a tailor-made fit for the Premier League, thanks to his robust style of play. Moreover, he is also known for his excellent work-rate, which should tune in well with the fast-paced nature of English football.
As for Tottenham, they have lacked the presence of a quality midfield enforcer under Jose Mourinho. Harry Winks hasn’t been able to impress the Portuguese mastermind while Victor Wanyama has struggled with injuries. Vecino, in that regard, should provide Mourinho with an additional option in the midfield department – making him a viable target for Spurs.
How will Vecino fit into the side?
Vecino can be utilised in the double-pivot alongside Tanguy Ndombele. The Inter Milan star’s robust style of play should complement the much more technical nature of his French counterpart. His ability to retain possession should also enhance Tottenham’s build-up play.
Not to mention, Vecino can be utilised in a more advanced role if necessary while he can also feature as a holding midfielder. But, in hindsight, the Uruguayan could be an ideal addition in central midfield. And given Christian Eriksen’s current situation, a swap deal between him and Vecino does make a lot of sense for the Lilywhites.
