According to a recent report by ESPN, Liverpool are concerned about Mohamed Salah’s ankle injury after the Egyptian wide player sustained another knock during their 3-1 victory over Manchester City at Anfield last weekend. Salah aggravated his ankle injury when he had to withstand a hard challenge from Fernandinho on Sunday.
It is understood that the Reds wanted the talented playmaker to remain at Merseyside and undergo a scan. However, the player has decided to report back for international duty and is expected to be assessed by Egypt (via ESPN). For now, Jurgen Klopp has no idea about the extent of Salah’s injury, which is a cause for concern.
Why The Premier League Leaders Cannot Afford To Lose Salah To A Long-term Injury
Liverpool are in for a busy run of fixtures in the coming months when the matches come thick and fast in the Premier League. Moreover, Klopp’s men are set to travel to Qatar for the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup next month. Therefore, Salah’s ankle problem could be aggravated even further if it is not addressed during this international break.
The European champions cannot afford to take any risks with their ‘Egyptian King’ as he has already been involved in 14 goals for them so far. The 27-year-old has netted nine goals and grabbed five assists in 17 appearances for Liverpool this term on all fronts. The ex-Basel winger is also averaging 3.7 shots, 1.5 key passes and 2.0 dribbles per game across all competitions (stats via whoscored).
Salah is an exceptional winger who can win any given match on his own when playing with confidence on the field. There is no denying that he has looked a bit off the pace this season, but it is only natural considering how much football he has played over the past couple of years.
Should The Liverpool Manager Be Worried?
Klopp will be worried about his star player’s ankle injury, but he has enough squad depth to cope with the Egyptian’s absence if it is only for a few weeks. The last thing Liverpool would want is to play him when he is carrying an injury as they cannot afford to see Salah pick up a long-term problem.
The Reds will now have to anxiously wait to find out about the extent of the injury in the coming days before they travel to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace later this month.
