In a recent interview with Sportingbet, Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn has urged his former side to cash in on Henrikh Mkhitaryan before the European transfer market slams shut on September 2nd. Winterburn shared his thoughts on the Armenian midfielder with Sportingbet and said, ‘Arsenal should look to sell Mkhitaryan to a European team this transfer window.
‘When everyone is back fit for Arsenal, Mkhitaryan is going to struggle to get any game time at all during the season.
‘Mkhitaryan looks a frustrated figure, nothing seems to be working out for him on the pitch – his passes are misplaced, his shooting is off and he can’t beat his man.
‘His performance against Newcastle on the opening game of the season wasn’t good enough, especially when you’re playing at the highest level.
‘No doubt, Mkhitaryan is a talented player but he’s going to struggle to hold down a regular position when everybody’s fit.’
It is no secret that the Armenia international has struggled to put in a consistent run of performances for the Gunners on the field. However, to his credit, Mkhitaryan did manage to put in some memorable displays for the North London outfit last season. He also helped Arsenal reach the final of the UEFA Europa League in the previous campaign.
The 30-year-old made 39 appearances for Unai Emery’s side in the last term, scoring six goals while grabbing seven assists across all competitions. He also has a wealth of experience while playing for his country having featured in 84 matches for Armenia thus far. Mkhitaryan has scored 27 goals for his nation in the process.
What Does The Armenian Playmaker Offer On The Pitch?
Mkhitaryan is a goal-scoring midfielder who can link up play with others in the opposition half. He tends to take up some dangerous positions in the final third which explains why he was so prolific in front of the opposition goal during his spell at Shakhtar Donetsk. However, he has struggled to adapt to life in England after failing to cope with the physicality and high intensity of Premier League football.
Winterburn made a good point on the Armenia international when he stated that Mkhitaryan wouldn’t be a guaranteed starter under Emery this season. Even then, the Gunners can use his help as a squad player if they want to compete on all fronts in this campaign.
Should The Gunners Listen To Winterburn’s Advice?
Emery is in dire need of winning his first trophy at the Emirates Stadium. Hence, inconsistent talents like Mkhitaryan could be essential if Arsenal are to deal with fixture congestion effectively during the winter months. Thus, the North London giants are better off keeping him at the club beyond this summer at least until they are ready to sign a replacement in the next transfer window.
