Leed United missed out on promotion narrowly, and their primary concern would have been about keeping hold of some of the key players and their manager Marcelo Bielsa. The Argentine manager is set to stay for another year, but players like Jack Clarke and Kalvin Phillips are continuously being linked with a move away.
New Premier League entrants Aston Villa are said to have an interest (Birmingham Mail) in Phillips. They have been linked with a £14m move for him, but nothing has materialised just yet. The English midfielder was one of the most vital cogs in the team’s wheel last season and losing out on him would be a massive setback for the club.
Positive update from Phillips
However, Phillips recently gave an update, and from his words, it seemed clear that he is looking forward to the next season with the Whites. The midfielder said, ”I think with the team that we’ve got we deserve to be in the Premier League, but it didn’t happen. The team that we’ve still got and the manager staying builds real confidence in the team. We’ll be looking to get a really good season under way.”
“We’re looking forward to it (new season), and hopefully we can get off to a good start. I’ve dreamt of this since I was a little boy. Just playing at this club and them giving me the opportunity to do that, I am forever grateful.”
His heart and sentiments clearly seem to be with Leeds United, and we think that there is no need for the Whites fan to worry about Phillips’ head being turned by the prospect of playing in the Premier League.
Why is Phillips important for Leeds United’s chances?
We often noticed last season that when Phillips used to have a good game, the Whites also played well. Not many in the Championship can do what Phillips manages for Leeds United. His on the ball composure and ability to dictate play from deep areas is second to none. The Englishman often dropped in deep between the centre backs to get on the ball and launch attacks. Off the ball too, the 23-year-old was immaculate.
His reading of the game, knowing went to press high and when to sit back and delay the opposition was very crucial for Leeds United. Phillips used to win a lot of 50-50 balls in midfield, and his tackling and interception were usually on point. Not to forget that the midfielder even fitted in well as a centre back when the team was reeling with injuries.
All this makes him a special player and the club should be delighted that he is looking to continue with them at Elland Road.
