According to a recent report by the Sun, Manchester City will have to break their transfer record if they are serious about signing Harry Maguire from Leicester City during the summer transfer period. The same source has mentioned that the Citizens would have to cough up around £90m to secure the services of the English centre-back in this offseason.
The Sun has also claimed that Pep Guardiola has identified Maguire as an ideal replacement for Vincent Kompany who is set to leave the Etihad Stadium to join Anderlecht as a player-boss.
Maguire’s Brilliant Form For Both Club And Country
The Foxes defensive ace has enjoyed another stellar season at the King Power Stadium after putting in a series of commanding displays at the heart of the Leicester backline during the recently concluded Premier League campaign. The former Hull City talent has featured in 32 matches for the West Midlands outfit this term and has three goals to his name in all competitions.
More importantly, he has made an average of 1.0 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 4.9 clearances in 31 English top-flight matches which has helped the Foxes secure an impressive 9th place finish in the league standings (Stats taken from Whoscored). Maguire had also enjoyed a fantastic 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign with England when he helped his country reach the semi-final stage of the competition.
What Will The English Defender Bring To The Etihad Stadium?
Maguire is a dominant presence in the air and has decent pace under his belt to recover when left isolated in 1v1 situations. However, what would make him such an excellent fit for Guardiola’s style of play is his ability to play the ball out from the back. Furthermore, the defender can also contribute by scoring a few goals going forward.
Is Maguire The Right Fit For The Citizens?
The Citizens will undoubtedly benefit from acquiring a player of Maguire’s talents ahead of the new campaign. The Foxes centre-back doesn’t have too many weaknesses in his game, which makes him the perfect candidate to replace Kompany at the heart of the Man City backline.
At 26, Maguire is currently operating at the peak of his career which makes him an ideal fit for Man City as they look to go for a ‘three-peat’ in the Premier League next season.
