According to a recent report by Marca, Arsenal have identified Getafe centre-back Djené Dakonam as their number one defensive target for the upcoming summer transfer window. The same source has revealed that the Gunners are trying to find a solution to their defensive problems from this campaign and so, the La Liga talent fits the bill perfectly.
The Recent Emergence Of Djene Dakonam
The 27-year-old decided to make a switch to Getafe from the Belgian club, Sint-Truiden in the summer of 2017. The Togo international has enjoyed an impressive campaign at Coliseum Alfonso Pérez this term after putting in a series of commanding performances at the back during this season.
His stellar defensive contributions have helped the Spanish outfit climb to the 4th spot of the La Liga standings heading into the final stretch of this campaign.
The fact that Pepe Bordalás’s side have a better defensive record than both Real Madrid and Barcelona this season goes to show how well Djene has performed at the heart of the Azulones backline.
The Togolese centre-back has featured in 32 league matches for Getafe this term and has made an average of 1.6 tackles, 2.0 interceptions and 4.5 clearances per game in the Spanish top-flight thus far (Stats taken from Whoscored).
What Will The Togolese Defender Bring To The Emirates Stadium?
Dakonam has also managed to represent his country in 34 international matches so far. The Getafe star is a pure tackler of the ball and can make some crucial interceptions for his team. Furthermore, he has also made numerous last-ditch clearances and is not afraid to put his body on the line for his team.
The addition of Dakonam will undoubtedly bolster Emery’s defensive options at the Emirates Stadium. He will be a significant upgrade over Shkodran Mustafi who has been abysmal for the Gunners this season. At 27, Djene is currently playing some of the best football of his career so he can immediately hit the ground running if the North London outfit ends up acquiring his services in this post-season.
Dakonam’s Acquisition: Wise Move For Emery?
The Getafe defensive ace is versatile enough in multiple positions across the pitch. He primarily plays as a centre-half but can fill in as a defensive midfielder or as a full-back on the right flank. Hence, it could prove to be a brilliant piece of business if Arsenal can orchestrate a deal to secure his signature ahead of the new season.
