Tottenham Hotspur entertained Leicester City at Wembley Stadium earlier today looking to close the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League standings. Spurs began the match on the offensive and took the lead in the 33rd minute courtesy of Davinson Sanchez’s well-placed header. However, the Foxes came back strong and created some fantastic opportunities to score.
The away team missed a penalty in the second half and were punished for doing so as Christian Eriksen gave his side a comfortable two-goal lead in the 63rd minute through his powerful strike from outside the Leicester box.
Claude Puel’s men refused to give up without a fight and got a goal back courtesy of Jamie Vardy’s finish from close range. But the North London outfit made the points secure in injury-time when Heung-min Son broke away and scored the third goal for Tottenham which made the points secure for the home side. The match finished with the final score of 3-1 in favour of Mauricio Pochettino’s team.
Let’s take a look at how each Spurs player performed during the game against the Foxes.
GK: Hugo Lloris – 7.5/10
The French keeper made some world-class saves in the second half which ultimately made the points secure for the home team.
RB: Kieran Trippier – 5.5/10
The English full-back struggled to cope with Harvey Barnes’ pace during the game but did enough to restrict him from scoring a goal.
CB: Davinson Sánchez – 8/10
The Colombian centre-back scored with a powerful header in the first half. He also kept his head under pressure and made many important clearances during the match.
CB: Jan Vertonghen – 7/10
The Belgian was guilty of giving away the penalty in the second half, but fortunately for him, Jamie Vardy missed the spot-kick to spare his blushes. Otherwise, it was another solid performance from the Spurs centre-back.
LB: Danny Rose – 7.5/10
The English talent worked hard for his team and was a good outlet for Spurs down the left flank. He took up some dangerous positions in the Leicester half but lacked the cutting edge in the final third.
CM: Harry Winks – 7/10
He linked up well in midfield and worked his socks off to breakdown some of the Foxes attacks.
CM: Moussa Sissoko – 8/10
The Frenchman was full of energy and running at the centre of the park. He was a fantastic outlet for the home team when Leicester was pushing for an equaliser late in the game.
CM: Oliver Skipp – 5.5/10
The Tottenham starlet was not able to get into the game and didn’t create much going forward.
CAM: Christian Eriksen – 8.5/10
The Danish midfielder set up Sanchez with a fantastic cross in the first half. He also scored the decisive second goal for Spurs with a powerful finish from long range.
ST: Heung-Min Son – 8/10
The South Korean international worked hard for his team and was rewarded from his efforts in injury-time when he broke away to score Tottenham’s third goal of the contest.
ST: Fernando Llorente – 6/10
The Spaniard held the ball up well and brought others into play in the Foxes half. However, he failed to score on the day which will disappoint him.
Substitutes:
CB: Toby Alderweireld – 6/10
The Belgian centre-back did enough to ensure the three points for the home side.
CM: Victor Wanyama – 6/10
He came on to provide some fresh legs in midfield.
RB: Kyle Walker-Peters – N/A
Not enough time to make an impact.
