According to a recent report by the Express, Chelsea are on the verge of completing the transfer of Juventus forward Gonzalo Higuain on what is being reported to be a six-month loan deal with Maurizio Sarri also having the option to extend the loan duration by another year based on the forward’s appearances, goals and results.
The same report has also revealed that the Argentine forward will travel to London today to have his medical and complete his six-month loan move to Stamford Bridge. However, it is unlikely that Chelsea would get the deal done on time for Higuain to play a part in this weekend’s London derby against Arsenal.
The 31-year-old has been a proven goal-scorer in the Serie A over the past five years since his switch from Real Madrid to Napoli in the summer of 2013. He has established himself as a top goal-getter in Italian football and is currently playing at AC Milan while on loan from Juventus. However, it seems like his time would be cut short at the San Siro with the Pensioners in pole position to land him this month.
The Argentine sensation has featured in 22 matches for Gennaro Gattuso’s team this term, scoring eight times while grabbing three assists across all competitions. He has also played in 75 international games for the Argentine national team and has 31 goals to his name for his nation.
At 31, the South American striker can still perform at a high level which is what the Pensioners could benefit from over the next few months as they look to challenge for major silverware once again at Stamford Bridge. Higuain has still got incredible pace and is a lethal finisher inside the opposition box which is exactly what Sarri needs right now to bolster his attack.
The former Napoli forward will be a significant upgrade over both Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud who have underperformed throughout this campaign. The lack of goals between the duo have left Chelsea’s title hopes in tatters, and now the West London giants are looking to salvage their season by claiming a Champions League spot at the very least this year.
Higuain’s acquisition on a loan deal will be a shrewd move for Chelsea which could give them an edge in the top 4 race going into the second half of this campaign.
