Celtic’s derby defeat at the hands of Rangers should come up as a wake-up call as the Hoops chase a ‘treble treble’. They are definitely still on track to achieve that as they have secured the League Cup and lead the Premiership table on goal difference having played a game less. However, the gap between the Glaswegian giants has never been closer in recent times, and Celtic definitely need a successful transfer window to continue their domination in Scottish football.
Reports from the Daily Mail earlier came out that Tottenham Hotspur are looking at a mass exodus this month and one of the players who could be sold is Victor Wanyama. The former Celtic midfielder moved to Southampton in 2013 and has continued his rise in English football.
However, due to injuries and quality which the current Spurs side have, the Kenyan international is being considered as surplus to requirements. In such a scenario, we think Celtic should chance their arm in landing their former midfielder this month.
The midfielder has his contract up until 2021 at the club so Spurs wouldn’t be under immediate pressure to sell him this month but the Hoops can definitely try their luck by putting in a bid and testing Spurs’ resolve to keep hold of the player.
Celtic were extremely poor in the Old Firm derby, and it was only Craig Gordon’s heroics that kept the scoreline respectable. The primary reason for their loss was that the Gers midfield completely overran their midfield and Scott Brown particularly looked off colour.
The veteran is in the final year of his contract, and even if he signs a new deal, we don’t think he can be trusted upon to start all the games. Therefore the Hoops could soon need a midfield enforcer, and Wanyama would fit the bill perfectly. The 27-year-old is a tough tackler, reads the situations well and can provide a base of attack. He also has that odd spectacular goal in him, and the midfield powerhouse would definitely make Celtic title favourites once again.
Wanyama helped Celtic land two Premiership titles when he was at Park Head, and a signing like this would definitely go down well with the fans. However, the player might look for a Premier League move as he is still 27 and can carry on a few years in the English top flight. Nevertheless, Celtic should definitely consider making a move for him. Even if Rodgers does not get his hand on him this month, the Premiership champions can try their luck in the summer.
