Reports from Goal a few months back suggested that Leeds United were eyeing a move for Alaves winger Ibai Gomez who had played under Bielsa during his Athletic Bilbao tenure. However, Phil Hay of Yorkshire Evening Post claims that this is a deal which the Whites are currently not looking to pull off.
Marcelo Bielsa has already downplayed (Leeds Live) any major movements happening in the January window in terms of transfers. However, the latest development regarding Samuel Saiz being unsettled and looking for a move away from the club in the next month should make the Whites rethink about Gomez given his talent in the attacking third.
The winger was also part of the Athletic Bilbao team which reached the Europa League final under Marcelo Bielsa only to lose to their Spanish opponents Atletico Madrid. We believe someone like Gomez can have an instant impact if he decides to move in January as he must already be used to playing and training in Bielsa’s unique system.
Traditionally a right winger, the 29-year-old can play anywhere in the attacking third, and we think he can be a significant threat while playing from central areas as well. United currently have the likes of Pablo Hernandez and Jack Harrison on the right flank and Hernandez is probably the most influential player presently in the attacking third. However, he is going to be 34 by next season, and Harrison is only on a season-long loan. Therefore, the club have legitimate reasons to sign this tricky winger in January.
It’s always good to give the youngsters a chance, but when a player like Gomez is available, then the Whites shouldn’t think much about going after him. The winger has so far managed three goals and two assists this season, and he can be a game changer in January for United. His set piece taking skills are also worth mentioning.
The Whites find themselves in a good position on the Championship table as they sit five points clear from the playoff spot. The fans are optimistic about this season’s chances especially given how well they have coped up even after some major injuries. However, they have been slightly lucky in their last few games. They have also lacked a bit of a cutting edge in the final third after the impressive first two months.
The club should definitely rethink its decision and go for Gomez who can be a solid player for the West Yorkshire outfit for the next few years.
