If the words of his agent Fausto Pari are to be believed then Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian could leave Old Trafford in January. The Italian has made only one appearance this season under new boss Jose Mourinho and was not even selected for the squad for any Match day of the Premier League except against Stoke City a couple of weeks earlier.
The only appearance for the player was in the Europa League tie against Feyenoord. The right back is heavily linked with Inter Milan and a return to Serie A looks very likely at the moment.
Having struggled to get adequate game time this season, there are a lot of clubs which are interested in securing the services of the fullback. Italian outfits, Juventus, Napoli and Roma are in the list but according to Tuttosport Inter Milan are the favourites. However, there has been a twist to this story recently with Spanish giants Barcelona monitoring the fullback as well.
The Blaugrana boss Luis Enrique has spent a lot of cash on defenders in the summer but is still looking to bolster his options at the back with his team already conceding 10 goals in their 7 games in La Liga.
Since the departure of Dani Alves to Juventus, young Sergi Roberto has been the first choice right back for Barcelona and Enrique wants to have an experienced fullback in his ranks who will provide some serious competition to the young Roberto.
Inter Milan, on the other hand, are desperate to add some quality and experience to their defence and having played in the Serie A before for Torino there is no better option for them than Darmian. Metro claims that according to the Mundo Deportivo, Darmian has been offered by United to Barcelona alongside Juventus’ Stephan Lichtsteiner, AC Milan’s Mattia De Sciglio and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Darijo Srna.
This has prompted Inter Milan to take action as the Nerazzurri are banking on the relationship of their all-time record appearance maker, legend and currently the club’s vice president Javier Zanetti with United boss Mourinho, to close the deal.
Zanetti played under Mourinho, when he was in charge of Inter, and captained the side to a historic treble in 2010, winning the Serie A, Coppa Italia and the Champions League. The Argentine has a very good relationship with United’s Portuguese boss and is prepared to utilise his personal relationship to get the deal done in the favour of the Nerazzurri.
With Tuttosport and La Gazzetta dello Sport both claiming that Mourinho is prepared to cash in on the defender who has 26 international caps for Italy, he is a player on the verge of a move with Inter Milan being the likely destination despite Barcelona being in the mix.
