Brendan Rodgers is trying hard to tie down some of his important players and he is set to have urgent contract talks with Belgian centre-back Dedryck Boyata. The 27-year-old is being linked with a whole lot of European giants including French heavyweights Lyon. The defender has entered the last year of his contract and Celtic are going to try hard to keep hold of their star defensive ace for the coming years.
Boyata was part of the Belgium squad which finished third in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He played the initial games as Vincent Kompany was out injured and the Hoops man gave a good account of himself in those games. Playing in the Scottish league, Boyata has never been seen in the same bracket as other top class defenders who ply their trade in the European top five leagues. Maybe that is one of the reasons why the 27-year-old will like to switch his allegiances.
The defender is currently off on a summer leave as he was part of the World Cup until the later stages of the competition. It is expected that as soon as he is back from his holidays, the club officials are going to sit him down and will have face to face talks regarding his contract situation.
It’s being said that chief executive Peter Lawwell and Brendan Rodgers are both confident that they will be able to tie down the centre-back to a fresh contract. However, if Boyata doesn’t agree to a new deal, we can see him part ways in the coming weeks as the Bhoys wouldn’t want to lose him for free next summer.
The Hoops have now won seven consecutive league titles in a row, however, Rangers are trying to bring back their glory days as they have made some smart acquisitions in the transfer market under Steven Gerrard.
Rodgers is also facing troubles in keeping hold his left back, Kieran Tierney who is repeatedly being linked with a move away from the club. Losing both the defenders in the same transfer window could be disastrous for the club as both of them are established members of the first eleven.

A good outing in the World Cup has certainly seen Boyata’s stock rise. The Belgian was a regular in the last campaign as he featured in 39 games in all competitions. The Celts had the best defensive record in the league as they conceded just 25 goals and Boyata played an instrumental role in that. The club should definitely try tooth and nail to keep hold of their influential defender at Celtic Park.
