Newcastle United are lining up a loan move for Swansea City centre-back Federico Fernández this summer. According to recent reports, the Magpies are prepared to arrange a loan move for the Swans defender if they fail to land Deportivo La Coruña defender Fabian Schar during this summer transfer period.

It is understood that the Magpies head coach Rafael Benitez is on the lookout for a new defender ahead of the new season and Fernandez fits the bill perfectly. Some sources have now claimed that if the Tyneside outfit fails to bring Schar to St. James’ Park before the start of the new season, they will look to seal a loan move for Swansea’s Fernandez.

However, they are not the only ones looking to sign the Argentine talent and could face stiff competition from FC Krasnodar who are also looking to snap up the South American in this post-season. In a recent interview, Fernandez weighed in on his future and was quoted to have said, “I will know more in the next few weeks, but I will continue to train hard and if someone will come in for me or not, we will see later.

“It has been a difficult summer for the club and the city but everyone has freshened up and are ready to go again.

“Krasnodar are one of the teams interested. I need to analyse that and other options have come in as well.”

The Argentine defensive ace is exactly the kind of player who can flourish under the guidance of Rafa if given the opportunity to play regularly at St. James’ Park. The Toon had to endure a difficult domestic season last term but still managed to achieve a strong 10th placed finish in the English top tier. However, the lack of funds available during the past few transfer windows will be a cause for concern.

The potential acquisition of Fernandez will undoubtedly bolster Benitez’s defensive options at Tyneside. The Magpies have an array of promising defenders such as Jamaal Lascelles, Chancel Mbemba Mangulu, Ciaran Clark and Florian Lejeune who are all competing for a place in Benitez’s backline. The addition of Fernandez will definitely improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within the Newcastle squad.

At 29, the Argentine centre-back is currently at his prime and will be a good addition to the Magpies squad. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Fernandez and whether he ends up sealing a switch to St. James’ Park this summer.
