The change in the manager at Arsenal will certainly see the Gunners spend big, as newly appointed manager Unai Emery looks to assert his dominance on the squad at the Emirates. This has seen the London club linked with a number of exciting stars but one name they are now after is Mario Gotze.
A World Cup winner with Germany, scoring the winning goal for his side in Brazil back in 2014, Gotze is considered one of the most gifted footballers in Germany. At just 26, he has already won five Bundesliga titles in his time with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, putting in a number of consistent performances in the German top flight.
His progress has been constantly halted by injuries, ranging from a calf strain to back troubles, which saw him miss 40 games for Dortmund since moving back to the club in 2016. He managed 19 Bundesliga starts last season, registering just two goals and three assists, but remains a crucial part of the side in Germany.
His injury history saw him lose out on a place in Joachim Low’s side but he is still highly rated by the top clubs in Europe. He has been on Liverpool’s radar for quite a while now, a reunion with Jurgen Klopp being the talking point. However, reports now suggest that a host of Premier League clubs are interested in his services.
He is valued at just £18m and Arsenal are reportedly leading the race for his signature. So is Gotze a player Emery should trust?
An attacking midfielder, capable of playing as a false-9 or on either wing, Gotze is at his best in a no.10 role, where he can control the game from outside the box. He is a gifted footballer with great close control while his vision and ability to ping a pass even in the tightest of situations makes him a dangerous player to mark.
However, he is fragile and might struggle in the English league but has the quality to turn Arsenal into a world-class side. He loves to have the ball at his feet and constantly looks to create something, which fits in well into Emery’s system.
He will walk into the first team at Arsenal and will play alongside Mesut Ozil and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, both players he has played with at his prime in the past. He is still 26 and if he can shake off his injuries, he could be a genuine catch for Arsenal.
