The lack of progress last season will see Manchester United improve on a number of roles in the first team this summer as Jose Mourinho continues to be linked with some of the finest stars in Europe. They are looking to add a CB or two to their squad this summer and one name constantly doing the rounds is Jerome Boateng.
The Red Devils have brought Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof in the last two summer transfer windows but used a centre-back pairing of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling for the FA Cup final against Chelsea, showing the trust Mourinho has on the options at his disposal.
So it does not come as a surprise that United are linked with a number of defenders for a move this summer but Boateng would probably be at the top of the wish list.
Having started his career with Hertha Berlin, the 29-year old spent a year in England at Etihad stadium, where he made 16 league appearances, failing to impress the Manchester City hierarchy, who decided to sell him after just a year at the club. He moved back to his home country with Bayern Munich and has gone on to establish himself as one of the best defenders in the game at the moment.
He has won the Bundesliga title in each of the last six years, to add to a World Cup and a UCL trophy that he won in the space of a few months. He was also named the German footballer of the year in the 2015-16 season and has been a mainstay in the side irrespective of the manager that has taken over the club.
He is a calm and confident presence at the back, happy to step out and cut passing lanes. But he is equally adept at soaking up the pressure, and clearing the ball out of the back when his side are penned back. At 29, he is still at the top of his game and will be a superb addition to the squad at Old Trafford.
Bayern Munich CEO, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has recently revealed that the German giants are open to selling Boateng at the right price. United have been long-term admirers of his quality and Mourinho will certainly believe that he is the right man to improve the backline for United.

He can walk into the first team and will be the leader of the defensive unit at the club and his previous experience in England will help him settled down quickly. He has two years left on his current deal and might be a tad expensive but is well worth the risk for the English giants.
