Everyone expected that Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld will leave the club in the summer transfer window but a recent interview from the defender will certainly give a glimmer of hope to Spurs faithful that their big Belgian might stick with them for another year at least.
Recently in an interview, while departing to Russia for the World Cup he was asked about his future with the North London club and he said,” Yeah, why not? (On continuing playing for Tottenham) I have two years left on my contract. I don’t know what is going to happen.”
Many were expecting that the 29-year-old will be sold before the World Cup as his contract talks with the club came to an unfruitful end. The defender has been linked with a big-money move to Manchester United but negotiations have been slow and that might give Spurs another chance to open up talks with the defender regarding his extension of the contract. His contract will be coming to an end next summer though Spurs do have an option of triggering another year’s extension. However, they shouldn’t let the deal come to that and should look to offer him a long-term contract soon.
The defender missed quite a few games last season due to injuries but even when he was back fit, Mauricio Pochettino continued using Davinson Sanchez at the back. Sanchez in his first season was erratic as he had some good moments as well as some bad ones and a fit Alderweireld is a better defender any day.
Tottenham finished third but they lost some crucial games from winning positions and that is a huge problem that Mauricio Pochettino needs to resolve. An experienced head like Alderweireld will certainly come in handy and maybe if the Belgian would have played against Juventus in the Champions League or Manchester United in FA Cup semi-finals, the result could have been different.
Spurs management team should get to work with his agent and tie down the defender’s future at White Hart Lane as he has all the facets to be one of the best defenders in the league. A move to Manchester United will not only take away a top player from their roster but will give their direct rivals a huge boost.

The defender made just 21 appearances last season and it was clear that there was some discrepancy between the player and the club. However, the club should come forward and try to resolve the matter as Spurs chase on new glory with this golden generation of theirs. Losing Alderweireld will be a huge blow for them and that might set them back. However, the recent interview might make them think that they do have a chance of renegotiating with the defender.
