Arsenal are lining up a big-money move for Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira in the summer. According to recent reports, the Gunners are looking to secure the signature of the Serie A midfield enforcer during this summer transfer window. It is understood that the Uruguayan international has a release clause worth £22m in his current contract with the Italian outfit which is set to run out in the summer of 2022.
Torreira had a sensational campaign in the Italian top-flight last season when he helped his side finish in the 10th position. The midfield ace has put in a number of excellent displays for Sampdoria during the course of last season which has not gone unnoticed. The new Gunners manager Unai Emery is looking to strengthen his options at the Emirates Stadium and Torreira fits the bill perfectly.
The 22-year-old has made the cut and been included in Óscar Tabárez’s Uruguay squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup which kicks off in Russia in a few weeks time. Some sources are now claiming that the North London outfit are ready to match his release clause in efforts to recruit the midfielder in this post-season. However, they are not the only ones looking to seal a move for the Uruguayan playmaker with Liverpool, Everton, Juventus and Napoli all being touted to make a move for the player.
The North London giants only managed to claim a disappointing 6th placed finish in the top tier of English football which will see them miss out on taking part in the UEFA Champions League next term. Hence, Unai Emery needs to add to his squad wisely during this ongoing transfer period so that he can help the Gunners secure a top 4 finish and compete for some major silverware in the next campaign.
The potential acquisition of Torreira will definitely bolster Emery’s midfield options ahead of the new season. Arsenal have an array of midfield stars such as Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny vying for a place in Emery’s first-team. The addition of Torreira will add more competition for places within the Gunners squad and improve their team significantly in the upcoming season.
