Arsenal are keeping tabs on the progress of Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy this summer. According to recent reports, the Gunners are lining up a move for the Saints goalie during this summer transfer window. It is believed that the North London outfit has monitored McCarthy’s progress at the St. Mary’s Stadium during the course of last season as he put in a number of commanding displays in goal for the South-coast club.
The 28-year-old keeper helped his team avoid relegation to the Championship and was one of their standout players in the last campaign. Some sources are now claiming that the Gunners are looking to secure his services this summer as they look to bring in a shot-stopper who can compete with the likes of Petr Cech and David Ospina for a starting berth in Unai Emery’s first-team. However, they are not the only ones trying to recruit the Saints goalie with Tottenham Hotspur, Wolves and Liverpool all tracking the English goalie ahead of a potential move this summer.
McCarthy just has one year remaining on his current contract with the Saints which means that the club could look to cash in on him this summer rather than risk losing him for free next year. The English talent had featured in 23 matches for the Saints last season, conceding 29 goals while keeping 7 clean sheets across all competitions.
The North London giants have only managed to claim a 6th placed finish in the English top-flight last season which will see them miss out on UEFA Champions League football for at least another year. Hence, Unai Emery needs to bring in some quality reinforcements during this ongoing transfer window so that his side can compete for some major trophies and clinch a top 4 finish in the next campaign.
The addition of McCarthy will undoubtedly bolster Emery’s goalkeeping options at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners have an array of goalkeeping talents such as Petr Cech, David Ospina, Matthew Ryan Macey and Dejan Iliev vying for a place in Unai Emery’s starting eleven. The potential acquisition of McCarthy will add more competition for places within the Arsenal squad and improve their team significantly in the upcoming season.

At 28, the English goalie still has his peak years ahead of him which the Londoners could look to utilise in the coming years. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of McCarthy and whether Arsenal can convince him to ply his trade at the Emirates Stadium next term.
