Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur star Toby Alderweireld. It is believed that United chiefs are confident of a deal being struck this summer and want to bring in the Belgian ace to bolster their backline. Toby Alderweireld has had an on-going contract issue at Spurs for quite some time now and it is reported that the player is bound to leave the team with clubs like Chelsea, Barcelona and Paris Saint Germain also circling for his signature.
The player has had a difficult season this time at Tottenham with multiple issues halting his playing time at the club. He has featured for only 13 of the 38 league games. Much of this is due to the unfortunate injury he picked up in his hamstring. However, even since his return, he has had to sit out for most of the season.
Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez have been preferred to Alderweireld and the Belgian has been an unused substitute in most of the matches. It is now being reported that he wishes to bring his Spurs career to an end and move on in search of a fresh experience at a new club.
Alderweireld is 29 years old and is at the peak of his game. He has two years left on his contract at Spurs although if Daniel Levy fails to renegotiate with him, the Belgian will be privy to leave the club next season for just £25m owing to a clause in his contract. This has seen the Spurs chief try to negotiate terms with him and Alderweireld has reportedly been offered a £120,000 a week salary, which is more than double the £50,000 a week he earns currently.
However, the player has turned it down and seems adamant about his decision. This has interested many clubs who are willing to pay in excess of £40million on the 29-year-old. At United, Jose Mourinho has 6 centre backs. However, excluding Eric Bailly, they have all been called out by the manager at one point or another owing to poor performances.

It seems the Portuguese boss is determined to improve the quality in his backline and believes Alderweireld is the man to do it. The Belgian is comfortable on the ball and knows the English league like the back of his hand. He is an avid reader of the game and will definitely add quality to the United team, should they manage to sign him.
