Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has rejected a chance to join Real Madrid in the summer. According to recent reports, the German international has turned down an offer to sign for the Galacticos as he fears that he won’t get regular first-team opportunities at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium next season.
Can’s contract with the Reds is set to run out at the end of the current campaign which means that he will become a free agent when the transfer window opens in the summer. Some sources have recently claimed that Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has made the German midfield enforcer one of his top transfer targets for the upcoming transfer period but the player has decided to opt against a move to the Spanish capital.
The 24-year-old midfielder has put in a number of outstanding performances for the Merseyside club during the course of this campaign and his availability on a free transfer this summer has alerted a whole host of clubs which includes Los Blancos. Can has made 37 appearances for Liverpool this season, scoring 6 goals while grabbing 5 assists across all competitions.
The Galacticos are currently occupying the third spot in the league table with a tally of 75 points in 37 league matches. Zidane needs to bring in some quality players in the summer if his side are serious about challenging Barcelona for top honours next term.
The addition of Can could have undoubtedly bolstered Zidane’s midfield options ahead of the new campaign. Madrid have the likes of Luka Modric, Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Mateo Kovacic vying for a place in Zidane’s starting eleven. The potential acquisition of Can would have been a significant coup for the reigning European champions as they will look to mount a realistic title challenge next season.
At 24, Can has his peak years ahead of him which any of his potential suitor would look to capitalise on. The Frankfurt am Main-born midfielder is extremely versatile and can operate in a number of different positions across the pitch. He primarily operates in central midfield but can also fill in as a central defender which makes him a perfect fit for the Galacticos.

However, it looks like Can is reluctant to join the Spanish giants which will be a huge blow for Zidane going into the summer transfer period. Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Can and whether his decision to decline a move to the Spanish capital turns out to be the right call over the long-run.
