Everton are lining up FC Porto manager Sérgio Conceição to take over the Merseyside club if they end up parting ways with Sam Allardyce in the summer. According to recent reports, the Toffees have identified the Portuguese coach as an ideal candidate to succeed Big Sam at Goodison Park this summer.
It is believed that Allardyce’s managerial job at Everton is under serious threat with fans protesting against him and calling for his dismissal in recent away matches. The Merseyside team’s board are yet to back the former England manager publicly which has led to speculation linking the Toffees with Porto’s Sérgio Conceição.
Allardyce has just 12 months left to run in his Everton contract so the club are required to pay his final year’s salary in full if they are to dismiss him ahead of a potential new appointment at the end of the current campaign. Some sources are now claiming that Conceição is being considered to take up the role of a head coach for the Merseyside outfit. He has enjoyed a successful season at Portugal after guiding FC Porto to a league title win while also progressing into the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League so far this season.
The Portuguese boss could turn out to be a shrewd appointment for the Blues of Merseyside but the fact that he is yet to prove himself at the top level will be a cause for concern for the Everton supporters.
Allardyce’s team are currently sitting in the 8th spot in the league table with a tally of 49 points in 37 matches with an away clash against West Ham United looming on the horizon. However, with the club failing to challenge for trophies this season, there is an increasing need for a change at Goodison Park.
The potential appointment of Sérgio Conceição could be a clever decision by the club authorities as they look to close the gap to the league’s ‘Top 6’ in the coming years. The Portuguese boss has an outstanding record for Porto this season and has taken charge of 51 matches across all competitions, winning 37, drawing 7 and losing 7 of those matches with a healthy PPG (Points Per Game) average of 2.32. He also has previous experience in France with FC Nantes but is yet to prove himself at the top level.
