An intense match against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium in their last outing more or less ensured that Southampton are getting to stay alive to play in England’s top-tier division next season. However, Southampton will look to do the unthinkable and scrap out a positive result against the Premier League champions Manchester City in their next match to end the season on a high.
It is now being reported that there could be further bad news for Mark Hughes at Southampton who might be set to lose his star player Ryan Bertrand. The full-back has seen a turn in his fortunes since his move to the Saints where he has come of age.
He has been excellent both in defence and in attack and his good form has seen him become England’s first choice left-back ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup at Russia this summer. With the player unsure of his future at Southampton, the Saints will need to look for replacements for him.
Here are three players they can target.
The former Juventus star is currently playing for West Ham United. He is however, no stranger to English football having played at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson. He is an attacking minded full back who is reaching the dusk of his career. The player is set to become a free agent in the summer and signing him would mean that the Saints will save up a lot of money in transfer costs.
The Celtic star has been simply outstanding for the Hoops this season. He has played as a first-team star under Brendan Rodgers and his commanding performances has seen the interest of multiple English clubs turn the attention towards him. He is good in attack, has a brilliant cross coming out of his left foot and can score a few decent goals when he ventures forward.
In defence, he is rock solid, he can put in a mean tackle and is extremely disciplined for someone of his age. Southampton could gain a future star if they can sign Tierney.
How about a change of role for Southampton? After selling a host of players like Virgil Van Dijk, Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, Sadio Mane to Liverpool, maybe they can now ask for a return favour by approaching them for Alberto Moreno.
Moreno is clearly a backup player now and could find the move interesting in search of first team action.
