Chelsea has reportedly joined the bandwagon of clubs who are interested in signing Manchester United’s French forward Anthony Martial. The talented Frenchman moved to Manchester United back in 2015 for an initial £36m from AS Monaco. Since then he has played a bit-part role at Old Trafford and has been left majorly frustrated this season after becoming the third choice winger behind Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez.
This has sparked interest from a number of clubs in the Frenchman. The notable likes of which are Juventus, Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur. Martial came to United under the managerial stint of Louis Van Gaal. The Dutchman had a special talent in spotting youngsters with great potential and Martial was considered to be a smart buy.
However, many were sceptical as well of Martial’s ability to adapt to the English league. The Frenchman proved everyone wrong by taking the domestic league in England by storm. He racked up goals and assists and more importantly, he gave United back the exciting and talented wing play the club had been craving since the days of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Frenchman is an excellent dribbler and utilises his low centre of gravity. He has a magnificent drop of the shoulder feint on him and can zigzag his way past defenders at will. However, with Van Gaal’s departure, Mourinho came in and the Portuguese manager was not impressed with the player’s lack of work rate.
Out went Martial and he looks unlikely to ever set himself up under Jose Mourinho. This has brought interested clubs like Chelsea into the frame who want to snap up the winger. At Chelsea, the Blues are having a rather average season after a title-winning campaign last year.
They have been slow in attack and the changes of Alvaro Morata from Diego Costa and Tiemoue Bakayoko from Nemanja Matic has failed spectacularly. They will need new attacking reinforcements on the wing next season with Pedro ageing fast and Martial can prove to be an excellent signing.
Moreover, the story of Eden Hazard moving to Real Madrid has been dragging on for decades now but the Belgian could finally move this summer. This would leave Chelsea exposed in attack and a star signing like Martial could be needed to restore the club’s position and attacking quality.

The move looks like an ideal deal for the Blues but how much Jose Mourinho will agree to sell his former employees remains to be seen.
