Manchester United have been linked with a move for Juventus left-back Alex Sandro. Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils have come off as second best this season to Manchester City and the Portuguese tactician will be looking to add further firepower to his squad come this summer.
United have been good this season but have definitely missed a few tricks this term as their numbers fell short in defences. In attack, they added Romelu Lukaku last summer while Alexis Sanchez was added this year in the January transfer window. This means that United boasts of a world-class attack with the likes of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford also in their ranks.
However, in their defence, they have been below par. David De Gea has been world class and has helped his team keep clean sheets owing to some individual performances. However, United’s performance has been extremely below standard with their defenders unable to play well. The likes of Eric Bailly are good but has suffered from multiple long injuries. Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo have filled in but none of the three players has been good.
The problems become even more severe in the fullback position. In left back there are three players. The original choice is Luke Shaw. However, the English player who used to play in Southampton has been unable to succeed at United. He has been in and out of the team again and again. This has frustrated him and he might leave.
Then there is Ashley Young and Matteo Darmian. Darmian has been frozen out by Mourinho and the Italian will be looking to leave this time when the summer transfer window opens.
Ashley young has been Mourinho’s first choice. The player is actually a winger who has played the first choice at left back. He has done an excellent job and helped his team fill in. He has tackled, marked and defended well all over.
However, he is still far from a complete left back and is also north of 30. He is slowing down and United need to move him on.
It now seems United may be ready to move on with Alex Sandro ready to be brought in.
The Brazilian is a flamboyant defender who has the potential to fill in as a winger as well. He can defend well, dribble well and cross perfectly. At United, he will be a perfect choice because of his playing style and he will add a good base to launch their attacks from the left with Sanchez ahead of him.
Jose is still unsure of his final summer plan but he should definitely try and bring in a player who has proven himself on the world stage again and again and was almost signed by Chelsea last season.
