Manchester United are looking to secure the services of RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano this summer. According to recent reports, the Red Devils are hoping to make a swoop for the French youngster’s signature when the transfer window opens in the summer. The Bundesliga ace can be considered as one of the hottest young prospects in European football following his recent emergence in Leipzig’s first-team this season. Upamecano arrived at the Bundesliga club from RB Salzburg in the winter transfer window of 2017.
His solid performances for the Bundesliga club during the course of this campaign has alerted some of Europe’s elite clubs, which include Barcelona and AC Milan, who are both monitoring his development at Leipzig. It is believed that the Catalans are currently leading the chase for his signature. Some sources are also claiming that the potential fee for Upamecano’s transfer could be in excess of the £75m that Liverpool paid for the world record transfer of Virgil van Dijk.
The 19-year-old has made 36 appearances for the Bundesliga club, scoring one goal in all competitions. At 19, he has immense potential which the Red Devils could look to capitalise on in the coming years.
Mourinho’s men of Manchester are currently sitting in the second position in the Premier League rankings with a tally of 71 points in 32 league matches. In any other season, the Red Devils would be well in contention of winning the league title but the majestic form of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City has seen them fall behind in the chase for the league title.
The addition of Upamecano will undoubtedly improve Jose Mourinho’s defensive options ahead of the new season. Manchester United have the likes of Daley Blind, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Eric Bailey, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo who are vying for a place in the Red Devils’ starting eleven. The potential signing of Upamecano will definitely add more competition for places in the United squad as they look to mount a realistic title challenge in the next campaign.
