Bournemouth striker, Benik Afobe has not ruled out a permanent future with Wolves and has called the side his “home”. After a struggling period in a Bournemouth team, he made the switch to Championship leaders and the move seems to be paying off. Afobe has racked up 3 goals in the last 2 league games against.
A product of the Arsenal youth academy and once deemed to be the next in line to lead the strike force of the North London club, Afobe has just registered one goal for the Cherries this season in his 22 appearances.
He got one against Leeds United in the 3-0 home win on the 7th of March and then got another against Reading last week. His strikes have been crucial at a time when Leo Bonatini, the club’s top scorer over the first half of the season, has gone 18 games without a goal while leading marksman Diogo Jota was out injured.
Afobe expressed his delight on getting his game back to scoring form. He said, “It was my first start in three months against Reading last Tuesday night. In fact, I was a bit shocked when my dad told me I’d only played one 90 minutes this season. It’s tough when you’re a sub not used every week, coming on for the last five or 10 minutes all season. But the main thing has been to build up my fitness. There are eight games to go. I’ll just keep pushing and hope I’m ready when I’m called upon.”
Joshua King, Callum Wilson, Jermain Defoe and Lys Mousset – Bournemouth are clearly overstacked with strikers now with Lewis Grabban serving a spell away from the club.
The expensively assembled Wanderers have dominated the entire second division this campaign and are well poised to take their talents to the Premier League next season. They are busy scouting for further additions in the summer in what can be deemed to be already a well-built squad. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have got themselves back to winning ways after losing 4-1 to a charged Aston Villa side earlier this month.
With 82 points from after 38 game weeks, the team from Molineux Stadium who entered the New Year at the summit of the table will be buoyed by the fact that the last 12 teams to enter the New Year at the top, have all gone on to secure automatic promotion.`
While preparations are already underway Afobe’s eagerness can be taken with a pinch of optimism for the Wolves fans. We all can agree that the talent leaps from the Championship to the Premier League is a monumental one and we have seen time and time again, players crumble under the pressure.
Afobe is finding his way into the game and when called upon can be relied upon. The transfer will be a good move for both parties involved. Moreover, Bournemouth will be able to clear out space in the wage structure and make way for necessary additions.
