Rangers Tipped To Bring This Defender Back To His Boyhood Club: What Should The Gers Do?

In a recent interview with Record Sports, former Scotland international Paul Dickov has tipped a Rangers reunion for Nathan Patterson. The Everton right-back has struggled for gametime in Merseyside. But he is expected to be pursued by several suitors this summer, after witnessing a loan switch to Sevilla collapse in January.

“He’s had some unfortunate injuries, but now that he’s back, he needs game time. There’s no doubting his ability; he’s a top young defender, and a move back to Rangers would be good for him.”

Told the former Premier League forward, highlighting the comfortable surroundings in Glasgow, which should help Patterson reignite his career.

The 24-year-old Scotland international progressed through Rangers‘ academy ranks before breaking into their senior squad under Steven Gerrard. He went on to make 27 first-team appearances for his boyhood club, including 7 league outings during their 2020–21 title-winning season. The Toffees splashed £11m to snap him up in January 2022, but his minutes have been sporadic ever since due to form and fitness woes.

With just 67 outings in more than four years, the Scotsman is expected to hold talks with David Moyes to have clarity over his future. He is fighting for a place in Steve Clarke’s Tartan Army squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the Merseysiders must decide whether to retain his services, with just one year left in his contract. They might opt for a cut-price deal over losing him for nothing next summer, and Rangers, likely to have another busy window, should bring him back to Ibrox amid an array of exits on the cards.

Rangers Need A New Right-Back

The Light Blues, on paper, are well-equipped on the right, with skipper James Tavernier, Dujon Sterling and Max Aarons challenging each other for the starting spot. However, Tavernier has decided to part ways by the end of the current campaign, drawing an end to an illustrious chapter. Aarons, on loan from Bournemouth, might return to his parent club after failing to make his opportunities count.

Sterling, known for his flair and flexibility, has often been sidelined by persistent injuries, and the management must feel the need for reinforcements to restore parity. Patterson, who has also been deployed from the left, holds the traits of a modern-day fullback. He prefers to make marauding runs, link up with the forwards and whip in crosses. Also, his tackling and timely recoveries bring balance between attack and defence. His arrival should boost the Gers, who must step up the show, overcoming the shambles of the 2025-26 season.
