If a recent report from The Daily Mail is true, Motherwell are expected to demand at least £4m for Rangers target Lennon Miller. But the Light Blues are not alone in the race for the emerging teenager. Their Old Firm rivals Celtic and the Premier League heavyweights Liverpool are also keeping close tabs on his progress at Fir Park.
The Steelmen sanctioned David Turnbull’s club-record £3m transfer to Parkhead a few years back. However, the asking fee for the 18-year-old has surpassed the same given his profile, ceiling and potential. Newly-appointed club chairman Kyrk Macmillan hopes to keep hold of the Scotsman ‘as long as possible’ but, at the same time, accepts the reality of revenue generation.
‘There may come a time where Lennon decides: “I want to try something new in another environment” — but, ultimately, we want to make his time at Motherwell as successful as it can be. The club’s been successful with that in the past in terms of moving on younger players and being able to bring strong revenue to the football club.’
Macmillan told Sky Sports (as quoted by The Daily Mail) while discussing the future of the prized asset.
Miller developed through Motherwell’s academy before breaking into their senior set-up as a 16-year-old. He earned a regular role from last season onwards and his emergence earned him the captain’s armband in the League Cup semi-final against Rangers. Although they lost 2-1, Injuries to Paul McGinn and Stephen O’Donnell saw him leading his boyhood side again in the next outing, this time in the Premiership against St Johnstone. The North Lanarkshire side grabbed a 2-1 triumph and the youngster led by example by exhibiting his mastery as a box-to-box midfielder.
Why Rangers Should Rope Him In
Despite having ample options in the centre of the pitch, Rangers have failed to live up to expectations under Philippe Clement. They are way behind Celtic and Aberdeen in the title race and the gaffer has yet to figure out the best possible combination while lining up a ‘double pivot’ in his 4-2-3-1 set-up.
Summer signing Connor Barron has been a revelation deep down the midfield. However, none of Nicolas Raskin, Mohamed Diomande, Kieran Dowell, or Dujon Sterling has convinced Clement enough to cement a regular status as the other ‘number six’.
Miller has scored 5 goals and laid on 6 more in 55 senior appearances [stats via Transfermarket] in Motherwell colours. He has represented Scotland in various youth ranks and should soon make his senior debut if he continues to showcase his versatility across multiple midfield roles. The Light Blues must secure his services in the coming days and continue the squad revamp with young and dynamic names all over the field.
