In a recent edition of the Daily Briefing, journalist Fabrizio Romano mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on Benfica defender Tomas Araujo. It has been claimed that Spurs would have to rival Arsenal and Chelsea in the race to land the Portuguese centre-back.
Araujo’s Impressive Form In Portuguese Football This Season
Araujo has made a solid start to this campaign after he put in a few impressive displays for Benfica on the defensive end of the field. The 22-year-old has featured in five matches for the Portuguese club this season in the league.
The Portuguese talent has been a dominant presence when defending inside his half as he is averaging 3.2 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 1.8 clearances per game in Liga Portugal. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from the back based on his pass success rate of 88.2% in the top tier of Portuguese football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Benfica will expire in the summer of 2028 which could make it tough for Spurs to get a deal done for him on the cheap next year.
Is Araujo A Good Fit For Tottenham Hotspur?
Araujo is a solid tackler of the ball and can sense the danger well to make some important interceptions for his team inside his half. He usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the offensive and can even play his way out from the back.
Standing at 1.87m, the Portuguese talent can use his strong frame to win a few aerial duels for his team. However, he might need some time to adapt to the physical nature and high intensity of the Premier League.
Still, the pros outweigh the cons of recruiting a player of Araujo’s skill set. Therefore, it makes sense for Spurs to move in for him this January or at the end of this season. We can expect Araujo to bring more bite and steel to Ange Postecoglu’s defence.
At 22, the Portuguese sensation has got the potential to be a future star in European football. Hence, he would be a good fit for the North London club‘s needs in the long run. All in all, Tottenham would be wise to bring Araujo to the English capital next year.
