In a recent report, Fichajes mentioned that Barcelona keeper Inaki Pena is on the radar of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain. It has been revealed that the Spanish keeper is gathering interest from the two big European clubs ahead of the January transfer window.
Pena’s Decent Run Of Form In Spain
The 25-year-old has made a decent start to this campaign as he has produced a run of impressive displays for Hansi Flick’s side in La Liga. Pena has featured in eight matches for the Catalan giants this season, conceding six goals but keeping five clean sheets in the process across all fronts.
The Spanish keeper has enjoyed a good run of form for Barca and deserves a ton of credit for averaging 1.8 clearances and 3.3 long balls per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even distributed the ball accurately from the back after completing 85.6% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Catalan club will run out in the summer of 2026. Thus, Barcelona would risk losing him next summer as he would enter the final year of his deal at the Nou Camp.
Should Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick Let Pena Go?
Pena can be a safe pair of hands in between the sticks when he is playing regularly on the field. He is a solid handler of the ball and usually clears the danger when being chased down by the opposition attackers. Standing at 1.84m, Pena can be a commanding presence inside his penalty area.
The Spanish custodian can use his quick reflexes to make a few important saves for his team. He has already proven his worth as a capable presence in goal during Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury absence at Barcelona.
Thus, it makes sense for the Catalan club to consider keeping hold of Pena for the long run. However, Barca head coach Hansi Flick would have no choice but to let him go if he intends to keep ter Stegen as his first-choice keeper next season.
Either way, the Catalan outfit would be better off waiting until the end of this campaign before deciding on Pena’s future at the Nou Camp.
