In a recent report, journalist Mark Brus mentioned that Aston Villa are keeping a keen eye on Villarreal winger Alex Baena. It has been claimed that the Villans would have to compete with Newcastle United in the race to sign the Spanish wide player next year.
Baena’s Impressive Run Of Form In La Liga
Baena has managed to shine at times during this La Liga campaign after putting in a string of impressive displays for Villarreal in the final third. The Spanish talent has found the back of the net once and earned five assists in ten matches for his current employers this season across multiple competitions.
The 23-year-old has been a good contributor on the left flank as he is averaging 1.8 shots, 3.5 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He was even tidy when distributing possession in the final third, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 77.4% in the Spanish top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Spanish club will expire in the summer of 2028. Thus, the Villans would have to make a convincing offer if they are serious about recruiting Baena next year.
Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Get Baena On Board?
Baena is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and has got the vision to create a few inviting chances for his teammates on the offensive end of the field. He can strike the ball with venom from long range and can chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals from the wide areas.
The Spanish sensation mainly operates as a left-sided wide player but can also function as a right-winger or as an attacking midfielder if needed. However, there are some question marks over whether he can adapt with the physical side and high intensity of the Premier League if Aston Villa manage to secure his services in 2025.
Baena would bring plenty of firepower to Unai Emery’s frontline. He is more than capable of earning a regular first-team spot at the West Midlands club in the future. At 23, he has his peak years ahead of him, so Emery would be wise to get him on board soon.
