In a recent interview with Caught Offside, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano offered an update on Aston Villa and their pursuit of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez. Romano said,
“There are no concrete movements so far for Liverpool’s Joe Gomez, despite recent interest.
“Aston Villa didn’t sign a centre-back in August due to Financial Fair Play restrictions, and Newcastle wanted Guehi.
“At the moment, it’s quiet and the next months will be important to understand how much Slot will use Gomez with rotations in several competitions.”
Gomez’s Impressive Season At Merseyside
Gomez had a solid campaign at the Merseyside club recently as he put in a string of dominant performances for them on the defensive end of the field. The England international was involved in 51 matches for Liverpool last season, picking up three assists across multiple competitions.
The 27-year-old was a decent performer when defending inside his half based on his average of 1.5 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per game in the Premier League. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from the back after completing 86.2% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Move In For Gomez?
Gomez is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to make some important interceptions for his side on the defensive third of the field. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and is a tidy passer of the ball as well.
Standing at 1.88m, the English talent can use his strong frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. He has got a wealth of experience in the Premier League and won’t take much time to adjust to life at Aston Villa if Unai Emery can devise a way to snap him up next year.
At 27, Gomez is about to enter his prime which makes him an excellent choice for the Villans to pursue this January or at the end of this season. He would undoubtedly add more bite and steel to Emery’s defence and could help the West Midlands club compete across all fronts in the coming years. Therefore, Aston Villa should think about moving in for Gomez soon.
