Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, journalist Pete O’Rourke claimed that West Ham United are set to rival Bournemouth for AS Roma forward Tammy Abraham this summer. It has been stated that the Hammers are eyeing a move to bring the English striker to the London Stadium before the end of this transfer window.
Abraham’s Recent Season In Italian Football
Abraham missed a lot of matches for Roma last season due to a serious injury. The English centre-forward made just 12 matches for the Italian club in the previous campaign, finding the back of the net once and earning one assist in all competitions.
The 26-year-old saw most of his game time come as a substitute which could be why he only averaged 0.5 shots, 0.4 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per game in Serie A. He lacked quality when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half after completing just 51.4% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Italian club will run out in the summer of 2026, so it won’t be easy for West Ham to land him on a cut-price deal this month.
Should West Ham United Boss Julen Lopetegui Snap Abraham Up This Summer?
Abraham is proficient at finding a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He can be a streaky goal-scorer in the final third and can create the odd chance for his teammates to score when he is playing well on the field. Standing at 1.94m, he is a strong presence in the air. However, injuries have derailed his progress in Italian football.
Abraham might benefit from a change of scenery this summer as he looks to get his career back on track. He has got some experience in Premier League football and won’t take much time to settle into life at West Ham.
The English forward would add more firepower to Julen Lopetegui’s attack. He might even help the Hammers challenge for some major honours over the next few years. Thus, it makes sense for the East London club to try and snap Abraham up in this summer transfer window.
