In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey stated that Aston Villa are set to win the race to recruit Feyenoord full-back Lutsharel Geertruida this summer. It has been claimed that the Villans are on the brink of sealing a move for the Dutch defender this month.
Geertruida’s Impressive Form In Dutch Football
Geertruida enjoyed a decent campaign at the Dutch club recently as he was responsible for putting in a string of impressive displays on the right side of their defence. The 24-year-old scored nine times and earned five assists in 47 matches for Feyenoord last season across multiple competitions.
The Dutch right-back was a positive influence at both ends of the field based on his average of 1.4 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 1.3 clearances, 1.2 shots, 1.2 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in the Dutch Eredivisie. He was even tidy when distributing possession from the right flank based on his pass success rate of 91.6% in the Dutch top-flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Dutch club will expire at the end of next season which could open the door for the Villans to sign him on the cheap in this summer transfer window.
Will Geertruida Be A Good Choice For Aston Villa?
Geertruida is a solid tackler of the ball and can make the odd interception for his team inside his half. He usually clears his lines when required and can strike the ball with power from long range.
The Dutch talent can set up a few inviting chances for his teammates up top and is a good dribbler with the ball as well. He is primarily a right-back but can also operate as a centre-back or as a defensive midfielder if asked to do so.
We can expect Geertruida to bring more quality to Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery’s defence. He is good enough to challenge for a regular starting place at Villa Park this season.
At 24, the Rotterdam-born defender has his peak years ahead of him which makes him a great choice for the Villans to pursue in the long run. However, there are some question marks over whether he can cope with the physical side and high intensity of the Premier League.
