If a recent post from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano is believed to be true, Sevilla have rejected an approach from Rangers for their midfield ace Joan Jordán. The Gers wanted him on loan with the Spanish side covering more than 70% of his wages, El Sevillista journalist Máximo de la Cruz Ramirez has claimed on X.

The 30-year-old Spaniard had a brief youth stint at Poblense before joining Espanyol’s academy ranks. Despite featuring regularly for their reserves, Jordán could not secure a regular first-team role and was eventually loaned out to the then Segunda División side Real Valladolid for regular gametime. There he impressed enough to earn a €3.80m move to Eibar in the summer of 2017.
His flying form in La Liga saw him securing a €14m Sevilla switch two years later, and the experienced midfield star exhibited his expertise in their 2019–20 and 2022-23 UEFA Europa League triumphs. He has netted 7 times and laid on 14 more in 198 appearances, but his minutes were drastically reduced last season following the arrivals of Djibril Sow and Boubakary Soumaré.
Why Rangers Must Reignite Interest
While it remains unclear whether Jordan belongs to new boss Francisco García Pimienta’s plans, Rangers’ interest depicts a statement of intent after last season’s disappointment. Philippe Clement is rebuilding the squad having roped in an array of promising project players. But he must also opt for experience, particularly after the egress of their veteran midfield pair John Lundstram and Ryan Jack.
This leaves a void deep down the midfield considering the Belgian boss’s preference for the ‘double pivot’ in a 4-2-3-1 setup. Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomamde looked impressive towards the closure of the previous campaign. However, the pressure would be immense on the young academy prospect Cole McKinnon and summer recruit Connor Barron to deputize the first-team duo throughout the upcoming season. Kieran Dowell, not an outright ‘number 6’, has played a bit-part role since his Bosman transfer from Norwich City and the Light Blues, therefore, need someone with prowess and vision to orchestrate the show from the centre of the pitch.
A player of Jordan’s profile would add technicality, composure and authority – something the Gers have lacked on big occasions including the Old Firm clashes. They must show a bit more ambition and table an improved offer for the midfield general.
