In a recent report, Sport Mediaset (via Tuttomercatoweb) revealed that Newcastle United are still showing interest in AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw. It has been stated that the Magpies are keeping a keen eye on the German centre-back this summer.
Thiaw’s Impressive Form In Italian Football
Thiaw had a solid campaign at the Milan club after he produced a string of impressive displays at the heart of their defence. The 22-year-old made 30 appearances for AC Milan last season, securing one assist in multiple competitions.
The German talent was a dominant presence when defending inside his half as he averaged 1.6 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 2.6 clearances per 90 minutes in Serie A. He has even been careful when distributing possession from the back based on his pass success rate of 91.6% in the Italian top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at San Siro will run out in the summer of 2027 which could make it difficult for the Magpies to get a deal done for him on the cheap this off-season.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Go For Thiaw?
Thiaw is a solid tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to secure the ball back for his team on the defensive end of the pitch. He doesn’t hesitate to clear the danger when the opposition are on the front foot.
The French defender can use his strong 1.94m frame to win his fair share of 50-50 aerial duels for his team. He even excels at playing his way out from the back. We can expect him to add more quality to Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe’s defensive department.
At 22, the future looks quite promising for Thiaw as long as he continues to improve with each season. He has what it takes to challenge for a regular starting spot at St. James’ Park in the coming years. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in Premier League football.
Still, the pros outweigh the cons of recruiting a player of Thiaw’s defensive prowess. Therefore, Howe would be wise to go for him before the end of this transfer window.
