According to Spanish outlet AS, Manchester United are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur full-back Sergio Reguilon. The former club believe the player, who played for them last season, could be a good addition to the unit ahead of next season.
Sergio Reguilon’s journey so far
Sergio Reguilon started his career at Real Madrid but moved out as they failed to settle there. He made a permanent switch to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2020. However, the club has been loaning him out after keeping him for several seasons.
Reguilon represented Manchester United and Brentford this season. He featured in 28 games and managed to provide four assists. He averaged 2.1 tackles, 1 interception, and 1.4 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The Spanish plays as the left-back and is an aggressive-minded defender. He likes to press high on the pitch and attack from wide areas. He has good crossing accuracy and aerial dominance. The defender also covers a lot of ground, thanks to his sheer pace.
Do Manchester United need Sergio Reguilon?
Manchester United already have the likes of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia for the left full-back role. However, both of them suffered injuries in the 2023-24 season. As a reason, Erik ten Hag was forced to utilize other players in that role.
But now the Dutch boss and the club want to cover the position by bringing Sergio Reguilon in the summer. The 27-year-old will not be a starter in the lineup but can be used as a backup and to rotate players. Ideally, he has the experience and skills to do the job nicely.
From the player’s point of view, Reguilon is also willing to leave Tottenham Hotspur ahead of next season. Joining Old Trafford wouldn’t be a bad choice but it will limit his playing time. If he wants to have more minutes on the pitch, he will have to look for any other club as his home.
