According to journalist Rudy Galetti, Liverpool are impressed with the displays that Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes showed last season. Hence, they are in the race along with other clubs to sign the player in the summer transfer window.
Joao Gomes had a breakthrough season
Wolves needed someone to step up after they lost Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes last summer. Hence, they signed Joao Gomes from Flamengo for €18.7m. The signing turned out to be a good move as the player formed a solid pair with Mario Lemina in the middle of the park.
Gomes featured in 38 games, netting twice and providing an assist. He averaged 3.6 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, and 0.7 clearances per game (stats via whoscored). His impressive performances in the English League have caught the attention of the clubs.
The Brazilian is better known for his defensive contributions in the midfield. He tries to control the tempo of the game and provide an extra layer of defence. He is good at defusing threats by tackling or intercepting the play.
Wolves to demand a high fee
Despite some good recruitments in the midfield section last summer, Liverpool struggled in that area due to a lack of defensive midfielder. The management was forced to make Wataru Endo play relentlessly, affecting his quality and intensity.
Hence, acquiring a defensive midfielder should be on the priority list for the Reds. In that line, the signing of Joao Gomes would make sense as he would bolster the unit with his defensive traits. His presence in the lineup will help others to play higher on the pitch.
As Enzo is on the wrong side of 30, Gomes can be groomed for the long run. However, Wolves are set to demand a premium fee to sanction the move. The likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Manchester United are also keeping tabs on the player.
