As reported by GiveMeSport, Chelsea are interested in signing Lille forward Jonathan David this summer. The Premier League club believe the player’s addition will bolster their attacking line and help them win trophies next season.
Jonathan David’s incredible numbers this season
Jonathan David arrived in Lille from Gent in the summer of 2020. He had a difficult start at his new home but things improved with time. Luckily, he started hitting the ground at the right time and emerged as a reliable player for his side.
David enjoyed a great time this season, where he ended up smashing 26 goals in 47 games. He also had nine assists to his name. He averaged 2.2 shots, 1 key pass, and 0.4 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored).
The Canadian plays as a centre-forward and adapts to multiple formations. He has good control over the ball and is known for his clinical finishing around the penalty area. He also links up well with his teammates but isn’t very effective in the air.
A good deal for Chelsea
Chelsea took major steps after they finished sixth in the Premier League. They sacked Mauricio Pochettino and announced Enzo Maresca as their new coach. Under the new boss’ guidance, the club have already signed the likes of Tosin Adarabioyo, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Omari Kellyman and Marc Guiu.
However, centre-forward is a position the Blues want to strengthen. Though they have Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku at their disposal, a new signing cannot be ruled out especially when Jonathan David is reportedly available at a bargain price.
David has one year left on his contract with Lille and isn’t willing to sign a renewal. Hence, the French outfit is ready to offload him for €20-25million. From Chelsea’s point of view, it will be a good deal to get as the player will add a lot of value and depth to their offensive section.
